A Schnauzer's coat is long, dense, and slightly wavy, while the outer hair is quite hard. When you stroke the coat, it does not feel especially smooth but rather a bit coarse. That is why many owners prefer to stroke the head or the little beard instead.

A Schnauzer can generally begin coat trimming after about three months of age. When trimming, owners should be careful not to shave off the beard entirely, since it is one of the breed's most iconic features. In fact, some owners may trim a little even before three months if the coat already seems too long.
Trimming a Schnauzer can stimulate new coat growth. However, in cold weather it is best not to clip the coat too short, because the thick hair helps the dog stay warm. Owners also tend to care about appearance, and the Schnauzer is often treated as a proud little dog, so grooming should not be done carelessly. A Schnauzer that suddenly looks unattractive after clipping may even seem less confident to some owners.
