1. More Exercise: A sufficient amount of activity can burn off a Belgian Malinois's energy. After playing or running all day, the dog would usually rather sleep well than waste more energy barking.
2. Give It Something to Chew: If the Belgian Malinois has something occupying its mouth, it will have less time to bark randomly. The harder the object is to destroy, the more challenging it becomes. So the next time you prepare to go out, give it a favorite chew toy first to help it pass the boring time.
3. Make the Dog Use Its Brain: If the Belgian Malinois has a task to do, it will have less time to bark meaninglessly. Before going out, rub your hands on its favorite toy so your scent stays on it. When the dog cannot see you, it will spend more time searching for your smell on the toy and may forget to bark.
4. Create a Competing Sound: Some highly sensitive Belgian Malinois dogs bark constantly at every little movement or sound. If you cannot completely eliminate outside noise, you can create another sound to interfere. For example, when the mail carrier passes by, you can turn on a noisy vacuum cleaner to confuse the dog's hearing.
5. Respond to It: Sometimes a Belgian Malinois barks continuously simply because it wants to pass some message to the owner. If the owner responds appropriately and gives some recognition, once the dog understands the task is complete, it will naturally quiet down.
6. Reward Quiet Behavior: If the Belgian Malinois simply refuses to stop barking, the owner should immediately correct it in a firm tone with a command like "Quiet!" Once the dog stops barking, the owner can give a small snack or some praise as encouragement. The purpose of this is to teach the dog that obedience and quiet behavior can earn the owner's approval and rewards.
