If you keep a female English Bulldog, sooner or later you may have to deal with pregnancy. English Bulldogs are naturally low, broad, and heavy-bodied, so pregnancy can be hard to notice early on. Extra attention is therefore important. Once an English Bulldog becomes pregnant, both the mother and the developing puppies need more careful management. Nutrition should be increased, physical activity should be reduced, and feeding requires particular care.
Early stage of pregnancy
During pregnancy, the mother dog should be given plenty of high-quality food to strengthen her body, support healthy fetal development, and help prevent miscarriage. During the first month, the fetuses are still very small, so it is usually enough to feed a good-quality diet on time and ensure the overall amount is adequate. At this early stage, many pregnant dogs have poor appetite, so more palatable foods may be needed. After about one month, however, the fetuses begin growing rapidly, and nutritional demands rise sharply. At that point, feeding may be increased to three times a day. Along with a larger total amount of food, the owner should also provide more protein-rich items such as meat, animal organs, eggs, and milk. Calcium and vitamins are also important because they help support the puppies' skeletal development.
Late stage of pregnancy
After around fifty days of pregnancy, the fetuses become larger and the mother's abdomen is noticeably distended. Because of this, the amount she can eat at one time may decrease, so it is better to give smaller meals more often. A moderate amount of vegetables may be added to help prevent constipation. Never feed moldy or spoiled food, and avoid giving food or water that is too cold, because such irritation to the digestive tract may even contribute to miscarriage.
Signs of pregnancy in a female English Bulldog
At around three to four weeks of pregnancy, the mother dog may show pregnancy reactions such as vomiting or reduced appetite. Around twenty to thirty days into pregnancy, the mammary glands may become more prominent, the breasts enlarge, and the nipples turn a peach-pink color. By around the fourth week, if you gently touch the abdominal area where the uterus lies, you may feel embryo-like structures about the size of eggs, which suggests pregnancy.
After the English Bulldog becomes pregnant, the owner should do everything possible to create a quiet and comfortable environment. The diet should focus on high-protein foods to meet the nutritional needs of both the mother and the puppies. The owner should also observe the dog more often and seek veterinary care if necessary.
