Pomeranians are small, fox-like companion dogs from Germany. They are expressive, lively, emotional, and often charming, but they can also be quick-tempered, direct, and sensitive in mood.

A smiling dog always feels magical to people. The Samoyed is famous as a smiling angel, but there is also a tiny smiling breed that people find even harder to resist: the fox-like Pomeranian. This toy breed comes from Germany. When its owner is upset, it may stare with innocent eyes and offer a charming smile, making the owner's anger melt away.

Pomeranians are covered in long fur, and many are white, so once they are groomed a little, they can look like fluffy snowballs. Of course, some are black and white, black and silver, brownish yellow, or other colors. Their faces really do look like those of a little fox, and their eyes can seem to hold the clever sparkle people associate with foxes. But after living with one for a while, you may find that its personality is not very fox-like at all.

Pomeranians have sled-dog ancestry, so their bodies are compact and well proportioned. Their intelligence ranks around 23rd among dog breeds, which is still fairly smart. In daily behavior, aside from looking like a fox, they do not act much like one. They hide very little about what they feel. When they are happy, they wag their tails wildly. When they are upset, they may cry out like children. If they want to go out and play, they will jump onto your lap and act cute. If you want to take them outside but they do not feel like going, they may simply ignore your plans and continue doing what they want. They do not hide their thoughts, do not pretend, and are very direct in expressing emotion.

When a Pomeranian is happy, it can express that joy with what looks like a smile, and that smile really can resemble a Samoyed's. At the same time, a Pomeranian is also a dog that does not easily let go of a grudge. When it is angry, it does not quietly pretend nothing happened. Instead, it may emit a sharp bark and directly challenge whoever annoyed it, whether person or animal. Owners should pay attention to this and guide the dog so it does not develop too much of a temper.

Pomeranians are naturally extroverted and lively, but even a cheerful dog has low moods. When that happens, you can usually tell by its eyes. If it looks pleading, or hides under a table or in a corner, leave it alone for a little while so it can calm down. Then you can pick it up and comfort it, and it will usually recover quickly.

If you see the tail drooping or tucked between the legs, that is a sign of fear. At that point, pay attention to what is frightening the dog, because it needs you to be its support. In short, although the Pomeranian looks like a little fox, its personality is nothing like one. Its smile, however, can truly brighten a home and bring a little more joy into everyday life.
