When raising a dog, providing food is important, but water is equally important. When to offer water, how much to offer, and how to make sure the dog actually drinks are all matters worth understanding. Water leaves the dog's body through the skin and respiratory system, helping with heat exchange and lowering body temperature. Water is also essential for metabolism. Normal cellular structure and endocrine activity depend on it, and nutrients can only be fully absorbed after dissolving in water.
How much water should an English Bulldog drink in a day?
A dog can survive two days without food, but not even one day without water. Losing around 20 percent of body water can become life-threatening. Under normal conditions, an adult English Bulldog needs roughly 100 milliliters of water per kilogram of body weight each day, while puppies may need around 150 milliliters per kilogram.
English Bulldogs often do not drink proactively
Many people simply place a water dispenser or bowl in one spot all day and assume that because water is always present, the dog cannot become dehydrated. In reality, many dogs do not actively seek out water, especially in winter, when they may drink very little on their own.
Giving water, like feeding, depends heavily on habit. Dogs do not reason about hydration the way people do, so the best method is to help them build a drinking routine. Good habits are easiest to establish during puppyhood, and the earlier the better. Because English Bulldogs are relatively compact in size, their water intake is also easier to monitor.
