More and more Teddy dogs are being neutered now. Neutering can help reduce the risk of future disease, but a Teddy that has just undergone surgery is relatively weak and fragile, so recovery care matters.
Each Teddy recovers differently. Male Teddy dogs usually recover faster than females because the procedure is external and does not enter the abdominal cavity. Female Teddy dogs undergo internal surgery, so keeping the wound dry is especially important. The incision must not get wet, which means no bathing during the early recovery period.
Do not let the Teddy lick the wound, so it is a good idea to prepare an Elizabethan collar in advance. Licking can cause inflammation, swelling, and even reopening of the incision. If that happens, the dog should be taken back to the veterinary hospital immediately for further treatment and possible resuturing. Because female Teddy dogs usually have larger wounds, it is often best for the owner to stay nearby for several days after surgery, prevent licking, and avoid strenuous exercise.
After returning home from the operation, do not feed the dog immediately. The anesthetic may not have worn off completely, and eating too soon can easily cause vomiting. Once the anesthesia is fully gone, female Teddy dogs should generally be fed only about half of their normal amount until they have their first bowel movement. After that, normal feeding can gradually resume.
During neutering surgery, the amount of blood lost is usually small, around two milliliters, so special nutritional supplements are generally unnecessary. The wound usually needs about seven to ten days to heal. The veterinarian will prescribe anti-inflammatory and pain-relief medication, and the owner should bring the Teddy back at the time specified by the doctor to see whether the stitches can be removed. Once the dog has recovered well and the sutures are removed, bathing and normal life can resume.
One additional point is that food intake should be controlled after neutering to prevent excessive weight gain, which can negatively affect health.
