Corgis are undoubtedly one of the most popular breeds in modern city life. Even though they are adorable, owners still need to give them some simple training. One of the most practical topics is how to train them to urinate and defecate in the right place.
Training a Corgi to Use a Fixed Toilet Spot
The first step is to choose a fixed place for the dog to eliminate. The area should not be too narrow, because Corgis generally dislike using a cramped place. A bathroom or another open indoor spot often works well.
After choosing the place, the owner can lay down a few sheets of paper and use one sheet to pick up some of the dog's urine scent. The dog's previous toilet area should be cleaned thoroughly.
About ten to fifteen minutes after a meal, the owner may notice the Corgi sniffing around the floor. This usually means the dog wants to eliminate. At that moment, do not let it go searching for a random place.
Instead, pick it up and place it in the bathroom or toilet area where the newspaper is laid out. Once it smells its own urine scent there, it will usually go in that place. After finishing, the Corgi will often sniff the area again to confirm the scent, which helps it remember the place next time.
Reward the Corgi
Whenever the Corgi relieves itself in the correct place, the owner should reward it with a small snack. After a few repetitions, most dogs begin to understand. Treat rewards make the dog even more willing to return to that same place, because it learns that going there leads to something pleasant.
Best Time for Toilet Training
The best period for toilet training is usually around four to six months after birth. This is one of the easiest times to teach the habit, and owners should make good use of that window.
During the whole process, the most important thing is not to hit or scold the dog. Patience matters most. Otherwise, the Corgi will only begin to dislike training, which makes later work even more difficult.
