Many people dream of having a cute Westie, but if you want it to obey your commands, some real training is necessary. Here are several simple ideas that can help make a West Highland White Terrier more cooperative.

Build a Relationship with the Westie
If you want a Westie to become obedient, you first need an emotional foundation. Without a real bond between owner and dog, why would the dog be motivated to listen? So the first step in training is always to build a good relationship. If the bond is not yet strong, spend more time playing with the Westie and giving it small positive experiences to warm up the connection.
Establish the Owner's Authority
Once you have a basic emotional bond, a Westie with a gentler temperament may naturally care more about your wishes and become more willing to follow commands. But if the dog is very mischievous, simply being nice is not enough to make it behave. In those cases, the owner needs to establish authority by being serious in attitude and firm in tone during correction. A Westie that senses clear leadership is more likely to calm down and obey.
Train the Westie Indirectly Through Daily Interaction
One of the best ways to train a Westie is to build discipline indirectly through daily games and interactions. Owners can often choose command-based or obedience-based games, which allow the Westie to gradually become used to listening without feeling that training is harsh or mechanical.
By contrast, if the owner is too stiff or abrupt in giving commands, the Westie may become rebellious or unwilling to cooperate.

Teach First, Then Correct
When the Westie is disobedient, the owner should first make sure the dog clearly understands what it did wrong and why, and only then apply correction. This helps the dog distinguish right from wrong. Once the dog understands, it is much more likely to become obedient on its own. Fair correction also lowers the chance that the Westie will develop resentment or rebellious feelings.
Use Treat Rewards
People often say that if you want a horse to run well, you have to feed it grass. The same basic idea applies here. Giving treats as rewards can raise a Westie's initiative and obedience. Once the owner has used the "stick," the dog should also have a chance to experience the "carrot." With good reward timing, making a Westie clever and cooperative becomes far easier.

A Small Westie Care Tip
Many Westies are prone to shedding, so owners can choose a lighter dog food with lower salt and ingredients such as EPA and DHA to help coat quality and reduce hair loss. Carrots and cooked egg yolk can also be given in moderation to help the coat become smoother and glossier.
