When a dog breed is restricted, the reasons usually come down to two things: the dog is so large that it looks intimidating, or its temperament is considered too fierce and potentially dangerous to people or other animals. In the case of the gentle Bernese Mountain Dog, the main reason is the first one: size. An adult Bernese can exceed 60 centimeters in height and weigh more than 40 kilograms. That very large body is also one of the main reasons many people hesitate to keep one.
Why Are Bernese Mountain Dogs Restricted?
The Bernese Mountain Dog is an excellent family dog and guard dog. It has a kind temperament, is reserved rather than nervous around strangers, loyal to its owner, intelligent, and easy to train. Even such a good dog may be restricted simply because it is too large. Bernese Mountain Dogs are large-breed dogs, usually standing about 58 to 70 centimeters at the shoulder and weighing around 40 to 50 kilograms. Combined with their long coat, they look very imposing. Walking such a large dog in a city can easily make other people nervous, so the breed may be included in restricted-ownership lists.
Why Are So Few People Raising Bernese Mountain Dogs?
There are not many people raising Bernese Mountain Dogs, mainly because the breed is not very famous and does not stand out to the public in an obvious way. Their genetics are also not especially stable, and they can be prone to diseases such as heartworm and cancer, with a generally shorter lifespan than many owners would hope for. Bernese dogs also eat a lot and can be quite timid, sometimes becoming so frightened that they lose control of urination or defecation. In addition, like many large breeds, they consume more food, produce more waste, and have strong energy levels, so they need a great deal of exercise every day. For owners who prefer staying at home, that can be a major disadvantage.
The Bernese Mountain Dog is still a very niche breed. If you want a smart and affectionate dog but feel that Golden Retrievers and Labradors are too common, a Bernese can also be a good choice. In temperament they are somewhat similar to Goldens: intelligent, gentle, and deeply rewarding to raise.
