1. Choose a Rottweiler whose temperament suits you
Even among Rottweilers, every individual dog has a different personality and temperament. Not every Rottweiler is suitable for every owner. Before deciding to raise one, it is worth doing some research first so you can avoid unnecessary detours.
Since most Rottweilers can live for about 10 to 15 years, keeping one is a long-term commitment, so you should choose a dog that really fits your lifestyle.
If you are not yet settled in life, think about whether you may have children in the next ten years, because some dogs are less suitable for households with young kids.
2. Do not raise a Rottweiler on impulse
You should choose a suitable Rottweiler according to your real situation. Do not choose a highly active dog merely because you want to force yourself into a healthier life. If you cannot consistently take the Rottweiler out for exercise, both you and the dog will suffer.
Write down the breed habits and basic requirements of the Rottweiler you want to keep, and see whether they truly suit you. If raising that particular kind of dog would force huge changes in your lifestyle, then you may want to reconsider the choice.
3. Help the Rottweiler adapt to you
If you want the Rottweiler to remember your name and respond to you, you should first give it a meaningful name so it can clearly distinguish when you are calling it.
As much as possible, call the dog’s name during play, interaction, training, or any other moment when you need its attention. When you say the Rottweiler’s name and it looks at you, that shows it is beginning to understand that the name refers to itself.
Whenever it responds to you, actively encourage or reward it so that it becomes even more willing to answer your call.
4. A Rottweiler, like a child, does not have much patience and can become tired of training easily
Training should run through every minute you spend with the Rottweiler, not be limited only to one fixed training session every day, because every moment of communication is also a moment in which the dog is learning from you.
We not only need to help the Rottweiler understand what we want during formal training, but we also need repeated reinforcement so the dog’s memory becomes deeper. Beyond training sessions, we should also give the Rottweiler more attention and guidance in daily life.
