The American Bulldog is not an especially easy breed to keep. It has a strong territorial instinct, a wild nature, and a tendency to be combative, which is very different from its relative, the French Bulldog. Bulldogs, however, generally share one common trait: they fear heat. That is why caring for an American Bulldog in summer requires extra patience and attention to help it get through the hardest season.
Because the weather is hot, the American Bulldog’s appetite will usually decrease. Owners should reduce the feeding amount appropriately, first to avoid waste, and second because leftover food spoils easily and can poison the dog if eaten later. For the sake of the dog’s health, never feed spoiled food. If the dog shows vomiting, diarrhea, shivering, or similar symptoms after eating leftover food, the owner should take action immediately and seek treatment so the dog’s life is not endangered. In addition, the following three points deserve particular attention.

Reduce food intake
Because of the heat, the American Bulldog will usually eat less in summer than in the other three seasons. This is normal, so owners do not need to worry excessively. Just reduce the feeding amount appropriately and make sure the dog still gets a reasonable amount of food.
Improve the American Bulldog’s appetite
You can chill the dog food slightly in the refrigerator so it feels more refreshing. You can also mix yogurt, meat slices, or cheese into the food to stimulate the dog’s interest in eating and improve its appetite. Fresh fruit can also be given in small amounts and can be lightly cooled, but it should not be too cold, otherwise it may irritate the dog’s stomach and intestines.

Replenish water
In addition, the dog should be provided with fresh water every day. Boiled water should be cooled before giving it to the dog. In the evening, the owner should also take the American Bulldog outside for moderate exercise. Since the dog already has a poor appetite in summer, lack of movement will only make digestion worse. A walk can help improve digestion.

Besides paying attention to diet, owners should also help cool the dog down. Walking time can be shortened appropriately, and walks should be scheduled for cooler times such as early morning or evening. Because a dog’s heat-dissipation system is underdeveloped, there are times when a person feels comfortable but the dog is already suffering from the heat. This point deserves special attention.
