The Dogo Argentino is one of the few breeds developed in South America. In the 1920s, Dr. Antonio Nores Martinez created the breed as a hunting dog for pumas and jaguars. This fierce and impressive breed was originally developed for hunting in packs. Dr. Martinez used the Spanish fighting dog, Spanish Mastiff, Great Dane, an old type of Bull Terrier, Bulldog, and Boxer to create the powerful and strong Dogo Argentino. It should also be noted that the now-extinct Cordoba Fighting Dog was the prototype of the breed, and bloodlines such as the English Old Mastiff, English Bulldog, Bull Terrier, and Boxer were added on that foundation. The initial breeding work aimed to remove the Cordoba dog’s excessive fighting instinct while strengthening its hunting ability. These efforts were highly effective and quite successful.
