Bathing a Shiba Inu is not only for cleanliness. It also helps protect the skin and reduce unpleasant body odor. This is especially important during hot summer weather. But how should you bathe a Shiba properly? Is it enough to apply shampoo and rinse it off? Not quite.

A Shiba Inu's sebaceous glands can produce odor, and dirt can become trapped in the coat. If this builds up, it may encourage microorganisms and parasites and eventually make the dog sick. That is why regular bathing matters.
2. Keep a regular cleaning schedule
Shiba Inus do groom themselves by licking their coat, but if the environment is dirty, self-cleaning is not enough. In general, bathing once a month is appropriate. In hot and humid regions, a bath every one to two weeks may be necessary.
After the bath, dry the dog quickly.
2. Bathing steps and method
1. Keep the dog in a stable position
Have the Shiba stand on your left side. Use warm water to wet the back, shoulders, hips, belly, and legs in order. Then apply pet-specific cleanser, rub gently, and use a comb or brush to clean the coat quickly. During rinsing, you can also gently press the sides of the anus to empty gland secretions if needed. Left-handed owners can reverse the direction.
2. Prevent water from entering the ears
While rinsing, cover the dog's ears so water does not run inside. Then rinse down from the top of the head and wash the rest of the body with clean water.
3. Dry the dog quickly after rinsing
After the rinse, wrap the head with a towel and dry it immediately. Wipe excess water from the rest of the body as fast as possible. If the coat is longer, you can use a hair dryer while brushing the fur straight.

1. Use comfortable water temperature
The bath water should be neither too hot nor too cold. Around 35 to 37 degrees Celsius is generally suitable. Water that is too hot can damage the skin, and water that is too cold may cause the dog to catch a chill.
2. Do not leave cleanser residue behind
Be careful not to let shampoo run into the dog's eyes or ears. Do not leave foam on the body either, because residue may irritate the skin and hair follicles and lead to inflammation.
3. Avoid unstable weather conditions
Try to bathe your dog in the morning or around midday. Avoid bathing in low temperatures, high humidity, or rainy weather, otherwise the Shiba Inu may catch a cold or feel unwell.
Bathing a Shiba Inu involves more technique than many owners expect. With practice, you will get better at it, and a clean, comfortable dog will give you greater peace of mind.
