If an Akita puppy develops diarrhea, the owners first job is to analyze the symptoms immediately, identify the true cause, and only then choose examination and treatment. Several common causes should be considered.
1. The puppy may have canine distemper or parvovirus
If an Akita puppy has diarrhea, one possibility is infection with canine distemper or parvovirus. Owners should pay attention to whether the diarrhea is accompanied by repeated fever, twitching, decreased appetite, or vomiting. In that case, rapid testing with pet test strips may help, and if the result suggests viral infection, the puppy should be taken to a veterinary hospital immediately.
2. Improper feeding
Sometimes the cause is simply poor feeding practice. The digestive system of a young puppy is not yet fully mature. If the owner gives hard dry kibble without proper preparation, the puppy may develop indigestion, which can then lead to gastrointestinal inflammation and diarrhea. In such cases, owners should observe whether the stool contains foam or blood and whether it has a strong foul smell. If so, veterinary treatment and anti inflammatory care may be needed, followed by dietary adjustment.
3. Digestive upset
Another common situation is simple digestive overload. Puppies may eat greedily when food is available, especially if feeding is irregular, and this can easily cause digestive upset and loose stool. In these cases, owners can often support the puppy with probiotics to help regulate the stomach and intestines. At the same time, it is still important to keep up with vaccination schedules and both internal and external parasite prevention.
