The Akita is often one of the first breeds people consider when choosing a pet dog. It is very attractive, lively in temperament, playful, and often behaves in a way that brings great joy to the family. But is the breed truly easy to raise, and how should it be trained in daily life? The following are some basic training points.
Akita training basics
First, when the Akita shows undesirable behavior, the owner should not simply let it continue. The dog should be stopped on the spot and corrected clearly, and in more serious situations an appropriate consequence may be needed so the Akita understands that the action was wrong and that it displeases the owner. Once the Akita is familiar with the family, it can usually understand some tone based human communication. When it hears a firm loud correction, it often pauses and looks at the owner for a new instruction.
Second, after the owner stops the dog through verbal correction, the dog can be asked to stay in place without moving. This is one form of punishment or consequence. If the dog is causing trouble and the owner ignores it, the behavior may become even bolder. Even though an Akita may show a pleading expression after being scolded, the owner still needs to be consistent enough that the dog learns from the incident and avoids making the same mistake again.
Third, if the Akita behaves well and obeys the owners command, then after a period of calm reflection the owner should stop the punishment and immediately praise the dog for its good behavior. Gentle stroking on the head together with spoken praise helps the Akita understand what is correct and what is wrong, and helps it avoid becoming a source of trouble in the home.
The Akitas lively nature is part of its character. From the dogs own point of view, it may not automatically know what is right or wrong, so it is the owners responsibility to teach it patiently. When a mistake is seen, it should be corrected immediately so that bad habits do not become permanent.
