1. The right time
Like people, Chow Chows follow their own daily rhythms. At the early stage of training, the owner should record the dog's routine for several days and look for patterns. Most Chow Chows tend to eliminate after waking up, after eating, and after drinking. If the dog suddenly begins circling or sniffing the floor intensely, it is very likely preparing to relieve itself.

2. The right place
The correct place is simply the place where you want the Chow Chow to relieve itself. A dog naturally prefers not to eliminate where it sleeps or eats, so the toilet area should not be set near the bed or food. Once the toilet spot is chosen, such as a bathroom, try not to change it. Lay old newspapers across the toilet area. If the dog eliminates on the newspaper, praise it immediately and let it smell the paper again. Then gradually reduce the paper-covered area, but always keep at least one piece of paper carrying the dog's scent.

3. Do not be stingy with rewards
As long as the Chow Chow relieves itself in the correct place, do not hesitate to reward it. A small treat and verbal praise can greatly improve the success rate of training.

4. Important precautions
If the Chow Chow is caught urinating or defecating in the wrong place, stop it immediately and take it to the correct toilet spot so it understands where it should go. But do not yell in anger and do not use violence. Some Chow Chows may become so afraid of punishment that they even try to hide the evidence by eating their stool. During the heat cycle, some Chow Chows may temporarily have more accidents. In that case, do not panic. It does not mean the earlier training failed. Simply correct the behavior in time.

In most cases, if you repeat this training patiently several times, the Chow Chow will develop good toilet habits. Puppyhood is the best stage for this kind of training. If the Chow Chow is already an adult, it usually takes more patience and more careful guidance.
