Poodles are often considered one of the least-shedding dog breeds, which is one reason many people recommend them to first-time owners. Not only do they shed very little, but they also have thick, dense coats that can be styled in many attractive ways. If your Poodle is shedding heavily, however, that may suggest an underlying problem such as parasites, fungal skin infection, or poor nutrition.
Do Poodles shed?
Poodles basically do not shed much and are among the least-shedding dogs. Their coats generally come in two forms: curly and corded. The curly coat is dense and somewhat firm, while the corded coat hangs down in rope-like strands of varying length across the body, neck, head, and ears. Regardless of coat type, Poodles are known for shedding very little, and that is one of the reasons they are so widely loved.
Why might a Poodle lose hair?
As mentioned above, Poodles generally shed very little. So if your Poodle is losing a lot of hair, it is worth taking seriously. Heavy shedding may indicate a health problem. Skin diseases of various kinds, excessive salt in the diet, or insufficient coat care may all contribute to hair loss. If your Poodle is shedding much more than usual, carefully look for the underlying reason.
Of course, ?does not shed? is always relative. Even people lose some hair, and no dog truly sheds nothing at all. A small amount of hair loss in a Poodle is completely normal and not a cause for panic. Poodles are still among the best dogs for beginners: they come in different sizes to suit different households, shed very little, and usually have only mild body odor. The main area that requires regular effort is coat grooming.
