Many years ago, most dog owners believed that if their dog was not performing tricks or entering competitions, there was no need to train it. I once agreed with that idea too. But as times changed and society progressed, our understanding of dog training has gone far beyond teaching dogs to jump through hoops or do simple arithmetic tricks.
Later, I learned about guide dogs, detection dogs, search-and-rescue dogs, and many other working dogs. I realized that dogs can become some of humanity's most capable partners and helpers, and that has been true throughout history. After becoming a trainer and truly entering this field, my understanding of Poodle training was reshaped once again.
I believe many people still do not really know what Poodle training means, or they assume, as I once did, that it is simply about making a dog obey commands. To help everyone understand what training really is, I want to explain how I see Poodle training.
Training helps a Poodle become the kind of companion we hope for
At the most basic level, training helps a Poodle clearly understand what we want it to do and how to do it. In one sense, training is a way for humans to guide canine behavior. But in my view, training goes far beyond simple obedience. Its deeper meaning lies in education and communication.
The relationship between an owner and a Poodle is a little like that between a parent and a child. Owners have the responsibility to guide and educate their dogs so that they develop a good temperament, behave appropriately, and adapt well to human society. This is part of the responsibility that society places on every dog owner, and it is something that both the owner and the dog achieve together through training.
Training creates an effective bridge of communication between humans and dogs, allowing the owner and the Poodle to understand each other better. Through training, we teach the dog a second language: the dog learns to understand the owner's instructions and can also express its own needs in ways the owner recognizes.
We cannot expect a Poodle to be the ?perfect dog? from the moment it is born. Without training, it does not know where we want it to go to the toilet, and it cannot naturally distinguish between a toy and a piece of furniture. We cannot rely on luck. Only training can help a Poodle become the companion we hope for.
Training is everywhere in daily life
For a Poodle, training begins from the very first moment it is touched by humans after birth. For most owners, training begins the moment the dog enters the home and continues until the day it leaves this world. In reality, every owner is, intentionally or not, constantly training their dog. Friends, neighbors, and even strangers on the street may also ?help? shape a dog's behavior.
Dogs are learning all the time, and we are all acting as trainers whenever we interact with them. The difference is that many owners do not realize it, and not every owner has mastered scientific, effective training methods. Since training is everywhere, I believe it should be part of the daily routine, whether you are working on basic obedience, skill training, reviewing old lessons, or teaching something new.
Training stimulates a Poodle's brain and helps relieve frustration and boredom. This is especially important for Poodles living in cities.
Training should be built on respect, understanding, and trust
I have often reflected on what the relationship between humans and dogs should be like, and what kind of relationship is best. At present, I believe three basic elements are essential: respect, understanding, and trust.
In my view, a Poodle's respect, understanding, and trust toward its owner come naturally once a strong emotional bond has formed. A dog that loves us expresses that love through respect, understanding, and trust.
Poodle training should rest on respect, understanding, and trust
1. We should respect the Poodle as an independent living being equal in value, look at training from the dog's point of view, and respect its willingness.
2. We should understand the Poodle's needs, especially its need for normal behavioral expression, so that training works with those needs rather than against them.
3. We should trust the Poodle and believe that it is capable of doing well and becoming the companion we want it to be.
4. Training should be joyful.
Poodle training should be like playing a game. People play games because they are enjoyable, and training should also be something both sides enjoy. That is what allows training to continue and be repeated over time. If either the person or the dog feels only boredom, training will quickly lose its value. No one enjoys a game that is not fun, and dogs do not stay engaged in training that feels joyless.
Poodle training should be positive and centered on enjoyment, not on violence, oppression, coercion, or fear. If we can already approach training with respect, understanding, and trust, then adding a spirit of play can turn training into something genuinely interesting and meaningful.
I hope every Poodle can live a full and happy life every day, and I also hope every owner can gain a deeper understanding and personal insight through the process of training.
