Skin disease is a familiar issue for many dog owners. Once a dog's environment is not well managed, skin problems can appear easily, and even after treatment they may return under poor conditions. Summer is also a high-risk season for skin disease in Teddy dogs, so owners should pay close attention.
Because the weather is hot, owners often bathe their Teddy more frequently than usual, but bathing should not become excessive. Whenever you wash the dog, rinse all shampoo and bathing products off completely, wipe away the water with a towel, and then dry the coat thoroughly with a hair dryer. Do not let the dog simply dry in the sun. The sudden change from wet and cool to hot conditions can make the dog catch a cold, and the outer coat may dry while the inner coat remains damp, creating a breeding ground for bacteria and leading to skin disease.
After a bath, clean the ears with cotton to help prevent ear mites and similar problems. Because there is a lot of hair around the ears, bacteria can grow easily if the area is not cleaned regularly. Owners should also check the hair under the paws and trim it when it becomes too long, which helps prevent slipping and falling.
When taking a Teddy outside in summer, avoid the hottest part of the afternoon and go out when the temperature is lower. Some owners shave the coat completely in hot weather, but it is usually better to trim it shorter and thinner rather than shaving it all off.
Another important point is parasite prevention. Owners should regularly apply anti-flea and anti-fungal treatments every month, because walks and playtime often involve grass, and dogs love to roll around in it.
