Many people feed their dogs three times a day simply because that matches their own daily routine. In fact, this is not always reasonable. For an adult dog, three meals a day is often too much and can increase the digestive burden. For a healthy adult Cocker Spaniel, feeding once or twice a day is usually enough.

Feeding a Young Cocker Spaniel
Young Cocker Spaniels should be fed small meals more frequently. The younger the puppy, the more often it should eat. For example, a newly weaned puppy may need to be fed five or six times a day, which means a meal about every four hours. As the dog gradually grows, its digestive system and eating habits change, and frequent daily feeding becomes less necessary.

Feeding an Adult Cocker Spaniel
Once a Cocker Spaniel reaches adulthood, one or two regular meals per day are usually sufficient. If you choose to feed only once a day, that meal can be arranged around 8 a.m. or around 7 p.m., and the amount should be enough to meet the dog's physical needs.
If you feed the dog twice a day, one meal can be in the morning around 7 to 8 a.m., and the second meal can be in the evening around 7 to 8 p.m. In that case, each meal should contain a smaller amount, simply dividing the total daily food into two portions.

At different ages, a Cocker Spaniel requires different feeding strategies. Puppies benefit from smaller meals given more often so they can receive enough nutrition for growth, while adult dogs benefit from fewer meals, which is generally better for their long-term health.
