Many people think only long-haired dogs shed, but that is a misunderstanding. Beagles are short-haired dogs, yet they can still shed heavily, especially when care, diet, or skin condition are not ideal.

Although Beagles are a short-haired breed, they can still shed quite a lot. Many owners report that Beagles not only shed seasonally, but may also lose hair outside the normal shedding season. Besides normal shedding, excess salt in the diet, poor hygiene, and inadequate coat care can all make the problem worse.

How Much Do Beagles Shed?

Beagles are small to medium-sized dogs, but they have a dense coat. That means shedding can be quite noticeable during heavy shedding seasons, and some loose hair may still appear at other times of the year. Many owners feel as if their Beagle sheds in every season, and dog hair shows up everywhere during cleaning.

That said, Beagles usually shed less overall than large double-coated breeds such as Huskies, and their smaller size naturally limits the total amount of hair they leave around the house.

Why Beagles Shed

Some shedding is normal, but a few situations can make it worse. Do not feed dogs the same food humans eat, because human food is often too salty and can negatively affect the coat. If a Beagle has skin inflammation or another skin disease, hair loss may also become severe.

Finally, poor grooming habits can make shedding worse. Infrequent bathing, failing to dry the coat after a bath, and not brushing regularly can all increase the amount of loose hair.

Reasons for Beagle hair loss

Even so, there is no need to worry too much about Beagle shedding. It is still a relatively small breed, usually under 40 centimeters in height, so its size limits the scale of the mess. Beagles remain excellent companion dogs: energetic, friendly, playful, and attractive. In China they are still less common than some other breeds, which gives them a distinctive charm.
